Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are lively buzz words amongst academics right now. Diversity are the differences in folx. Whether that be difference of thought, culture, or ability level, it is the presence of difference. Equity speaks to folx having access to what they need, when they need it. Equity “levels the playing field” for marginalized folx (based on many social factors). Inclusion is not only being “invited to the party”, but being asked to plan the event.
When you put resources into building an inclusive community, diversity and equity organically follow. People should feel particularly welcomed in educational spaces. Through visual representations and social media presence, to the organization’s strategic plan, each aspect of the environment should outwardly welcome all voices to the table. An inclusive community lessens barriers for marginalized folx. When barriers decrease, voices are amplified. When these voices are amplified, equitable practices become aligned with the diversity of the voices.
In acknowledging DEI, it is important to note the wide range of diversity. Learning styles, home life, previous trauma, and other lived experiences all contribute to the sense of community diversity. It is vital to value an appreciation for, and celebration of, differences as a fundamental piece of lifelong learning.

I’ve had the honor of engaging in discussions around race, gender expression, and even international social justice issues. The students here are deeply engaged in topics that will impact our global society today and tomorrow, and I aim to continue to provide brave spaces for this critical exploration."
