Julia Bowen, Executive Director

Ms. Bowen has a background in business management as well as education. She worked for 6 years at the Monitor Group, an international consulting company headquartered in Boston, where she consulted to clients in the US, England, Israel and Bangladesh. She also worked on the management team of Monitor, with significant responsibilities in human asset management. Ms. Bowen left the business world to pursue her passion for education. Prior to joining the founding BArT team, Ms. Bowen was a math teacher at Mount Greylock Regional High School where she piloted innovative uses of technology in her classroom. She has been a Big Sister and tutored inmates in the Suffolk County Jail. In addition to her work at BArT, Ms. Bowen serves as the Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association, is a Founding Director of the Massachusetts Center for Charter Public School Excellence, and is a Director of the Northern Berkshire United Way. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Dartmouth College.

Benjamin Klompus, Principal

Ben Klompus brings to BArT over ten years of experience in a variety of educational settings. Prior to joining BArT in the summer of 2006, Mr. Klompus was a teacher at Sullivan School in North Adams for 4 years and a Resident Director at Greylock A Better Chance in Williamstown for 2 years. While teaching in North Adams, Mr. Klompus co-chaired a district-wide Math Improvement initiative and served as a representative on both the Mentor Program Design Team and the Professional Development Committee. Prior to teaching in North Adams, Mr. Klompus served as the Chief Educator / First Mate with Sea Education Association, an oceanic research program for high school and college students that teaches oceanography, maritime history and nautical science. Mr. Klompus received his Masters Degree in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education with a concentration in Administration, Planning and Social Policy, educational licensure through Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and a Bachelor of Science from Colorado College.

J.P. Henkel, Director of Arts & Technology


Mr. Henkel brings to BArT over 15 years of experience in education, publishing, and graphic design. He began his teaching career at the William Howard High School in Staffordshire, England and has taught middle school in Atchison, Kansas, and high school in Averill Park, New York. As a technology integration staff developer for the New York City Public Schools, Mr. Henkel founded "@School", a quarterly magazine providing a forum for teachers to share ideas on integrating technology.  Prior to joining the BArT community in the Summer of 2007, he spent 7 years as a textbook editor and production manager for Thomson Delmar Learning, where he contributed to the publication of over 80 textbooks.  He has worked as a freelance graphic designer since 1991.  Mr. Henkel achieved an AAS in Architecture from the University of Toledo, a BS in Technology Education from Bowling Green State University, and is pursuing an MBA in Training from the New York Institute of Technology. He is a classically trained percussionist and enjoys SCUBA diving, pottery, historic homes renovation, and relaxing with a good novel.



Marti Mellor, Business Manager

Marti Mellor came to BArT with close to twenty years experience as a regional school business manager at Mount Greylock Regional School District.  While at Mount Greylock, she was a founding member of the Berkshire Health Group and served on the board for 15 years.  In 2005, Ms. Mellor retired from Mount Greylock and joined BArT's team as a part-time business manager.  She also serves as the business manager and bookkeeper for the BArT Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to support the school's activities.  She has a Bachelor's degree from East Central University in Oklahoma.

Juraye Pierson, Student Services Team Coordinator & Special Education Teacher

Mrs. Pierson comes to BArT from Pittsfield, where she taught special education at Reid Middle School and 4th grade at Morningside Elementary School.Prior to teaching in Pittsfield, she worked in a residential special education school teaching children with severe emotional disabilities, in a therapeutic after-school program and in a children's stabilization unit. In addition to her years of service working with children, Mrs. Pierson worked in a teen mothers' program at the Redfield House in Pittsfield and served as the Chairperson for the Fresh Air Fund in Berkshire County for three years. Mrs. Pierson is a sports enthusiast who can be found outside either running, roller-blading, or biking. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology with a minor in social work from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA). Currently, Mrs. Pierson is completing her Masters Degree in Special Education, also at MCLA.

Katie Reefe, Director of Curriculum & Assessment

Prior to working at BArT, Ms. Reefe worked as an independent consultant working on projects involving curriculum design and review, professional development, and staff hiring & management.  She was a teacher and internship coordinator at Echo Hill Outdoor School in Maryland and has worked with Morry's Camp in New York as a counselor and community coordinator.  Ms. Reefe received her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science and Policy at Duke University and her Masters of Science in Kinesiology and Outdoor Education from the University of New Hampshire.
